Christmas Tree in Dry Dock!
Limerick December 24th 2011 - Not far from the Augustinian church
the river Shannon opens out towards a broad estuary before it merges
with the Atlantic Ocean. In recent years a fabricated Xmas tree has
been floated on the river. Recycled steel from the old Thomond Park,
the spiritual home of Rugby in Limerick has been forged into the
shape of a Christmas tree festooned with coloured lights. During its
three years on the river it has been buffeted by freak weather
conditions. At one stage it was dragged from its moorings and swept
in the strong current under Shannon Bridge and caught under an arch
in a pulverised condition. It has been decided to keep it in dry
dock this year as a stricken relic of Limerick’s second religion and
its shrine (Rugby and Thomond Park). For many it is the first
religion of this city and we have been known to bring the two
religious together in the Augustinian Church.

Remembering Well
Limerick December 14th 2011 - Kevin Egan a faithful Eucharistic
Minister in the Augustinian Church for many years has broken into
print with the launch of his memoirs called “ I Remember Well”. He
has written out of the memories and stories of his childhood in
Limerick in the 1940s and 1950s. His personal and colourful
recollections contribute richly to the social history of these
times. He documents some of the hardships and the dominance of the
Catholic Church in that era. Kevin still contributes his musical
gifts to the weekly Mass for the Sick in our church. The book was
launched by Cathy O’Halloran, Mid-West correspondent for Irish Radio
and Television (RTE).

Little Revelations
Limerick September 24th 2011 - The September-October issue of
Spirituality an Irish periodical with worldwide
circulation carried some positive comments about the Augustinian
Church in Limerick. In an article entitled Little
Revelations, a retired school principal living in Limerick,
Gearóid Ó Tiarnaig focuses on the Augustinian church as “an oasis
for both regular worshippers and passers-by”. He mentions some of
our community among his “little revelations”. He attends our church
regularly for morning Mass. Gearóid has been an active promoter and
supporter of a programme of on-going Scriptural and theological
formation which is having a successful run in the Horse and Jockey
Hotel, Co. Tipperary. It is organised by a team of Augustinians for
their confreres and lay friends.

Arthur's Day
Limerick September 22nd 2011 - The global celebration of Arthur’s
Day impacted on the prayer life of the Augustinian community! The
200th birthday of Arthur Guinness was used as an occasion for the
high-powered promotion of a stimulating beverage of Irish origin!
Our evening prayer at 6.00pm competed with the raucous countdown to
the raising of glasses to Arthur, followed by an explosion of
“music” and high decibel cheering in adjacent pubs. Our
contemplative silences were filled with a biblical “tumult of the
peoples!”
