Augustinian Appointments & News

Limerick January 26th 2012 - A Maltese Augustinian Fr. Prospero Grech is one of the 22 new Cardinals to be created at a Consistory of February 18th. He has been a member of our international community at St. Monica’s College Rome for many decades. Fr. Prospero is an outstanding Scripture scholar. At the most recent full Chapter Meeting of Irish Augustinians which took place in Limerick he shared a daily reflection at Morning Prayer. Some of us were blessed in our student days by his wit, his wisdom and his scholarship as a lecturer. I can’t imagine him insisting on his official title ‘Your Eminence’. He will remain a brother among his Augustinian confreres and friends.

The Augustinian Bishop of Lancaster, Michael Campbell has been stimulating a lively debate in the English church circles by raising questions about the viability of Catholic schools with large numbers of non-Catholics and non-practicing pupils and families, a debate which is beginning here because of the changed circumstances in our Catholic schools.

Archbishop Charles Brown, the newly appointed papal Nuncio to Ireland, preached in St. Patrick’s Augustinian church before his departure for Dublin. He spoke about the enduring impact of Irish missionaries around the world. Re-building bridges between the Vatican and the Irish state is going to be a delicate and difficult undertaking for him!
