Counselling ServiceSomeone to ListenAs part of Vision 2000, a renewal programme established in response to a listening process which was conducted at the beginning of the new millennium, a walk-in Counselling Service was established in St. Augustine’s Church, Limerick.
From
a survey of needs and pastoral contacts the community
was becoming aware of:
·
A growing
sense of isolation and loneliness while the economy prospered.
·
The
accelerating pace of life leaving vulnerable individuals behind.
·
Commercial
development and the loss of a residential community in the inner
city.
·
Declining
religious practice and Parishes as centres of community no
longer evident in a city context.
·
Arrival
of large numbers of immigrants needing personal support,
pastoral care, recovery and integration.
·
A variety of
social and family problems in troublesome city suburbs and
housing estates. · Recession putting personal and financial stress on families and individuals.
·
Alarming
increase in the incidence of suicide and self-harm.
